summer reading list

Some people have asked how I decide what to read, but there is no sophisticated process that I use.  I usually read or hear about certain books and type them into my phone for future reference.  Or sometimes I’ll use the website, whatshouldireadnext.com.  Here are some books on my list that I have NOT read.  I’m planning on reading most of these and then doing another post on whether or not I liked them.

how to make a pretty bed, part II

Back in January I wrote about how to make a pretty bed (read it here).  I finally have pictures of our new bed, and here they are!

We have 3 Euro pillows in the back.  We got the Euro shams from Kohls.  Then we have 2 king pillows with the pillowcases that came with our sheets.  In front of those are 2 standard pillows with printed pillowcases from Kohls.  And in front of THAT are 2 decorative pillows.  The pillow covers are from here.

So there you have it.  A pretty bed = a bed with no shortage of pillows.

spring bucket list

Spring is here (finally)!  And I’m itching to spend LOTS of time outside after this ca-razy winter we’ve had.  Here are some things on my Spring Bucket List.

1)  Ride Bikes

We got some cheap ones from Sam’s (this one and this one).  We have a pretty good trail system here in Fayetteville so it’ll be fun to ride around.  And the trails don’t look anything like this picture, but I wanted it to look as awesome as possible.

Cascades Trail, Cascades Hut

2)  Go On A Hike

There are tons of places to hike around here.  Mount Kessler, Mount Seqouyah, Devil’s Den, Hobb’s State Park, Pea Ridge Trail, etc.  Hobb’s State Park pictured.

3)  Clean Out My Closet

I’ve already pretty much completed this one and it felt so good.  Cleaning out your closet is a great way to figure out what you have wayy too much of.  I have a note on my bulletin board that says I’m no longer allowed to buy jeans or sandals.

4)  Drive-In Movie

Already accomplished this one too.  It’s amazing when you can finally stay outside after dark and not be freezing – love it.

5)  Gator Golf

We all know I’m obsessed with Gator Golf, right?  Well, I am.  And I have 3 free passes!!

6)  Yard Work

We’ve already worked on this some (you can read about that here).  But there is definitely some more work to be done.  This is our inspiration picture:

I’m kidding.

7)  Farmer’s Market

Perfect weather.  And a great time to get fresh produce!

8)  Baseball Game

Is it bad that I go for the hot dogs?

9)  Picnic

So fun and relaxing.  Unless you go to a park where they happen to be larping – not that that has ever happened to us.  😉

10)  Amusement Park

The best time to do this.  Not too hot yet and the lines aren’t as long.  Crossing my fingers that we can fit this in somewhere.

Looks like a fun-filled Spring!  Get out and enjoy the weather before we’re all complaining about the heat!

how to simplify life

In our day and age we all have tons of things competing for our time and money.  Here are some things I try to remember when I know I need to simplify.

live simply2

I Can’t Do/Have It All – I think that having a good sense of self helps when nothing seems like “enough”.  An easy way to narrow my focus and keep things simple is by making a list of all my interests.  The key is making sure the list isn’t ridiculously long, that’s how you run into trouble.  For example, if I was interested in photography, cooking, reading, golf, scrapbooking, fashion, and going to concerts I’d be, first of all – broke and secondly – overwhelmed.  Try to narrow your list to 4 or 5 things that you like to do regularly.  If there are things you like to do (i.e. shop for clothes, go to movies) but you don’t do them regularly, no need to include them.

Prioritize – The key to living simply in my opinion.  How important are those 4 or 5 things in my list to me?  Am I spending time & money on things that don’t matter as much to me?  What things should I really be doing but I haven’t been?

Be Cool – Slowing down and taking a breather is another great way to simplify.  Sometimes my own actions complicate life, and I end up needing to take a time-out.  For example, getting worked up over small things or buying a bunch of unneccessary stuff adds disorder to your life.  Take time to chillax.  FYI – being cool only helps when I’m about to add chaos to my life, not when there is something that actually needs to be attended to.

Consistency – Prioritizing and consistency go hand in hand.  Whatever you do consistently is what you prioritize.  If I want to prioritize saving money then I would not shop consistently.  If I wanted to prioritize being healthy then I’d cook at home and workout consistently.  If I wanted to prioritize organizing my home I’d consistently get rid of things and clean up after myself.  You get the idea..

Prayer – I’m at my best when I slow down and pray.  It helps me to think clearly and gives me perspective.  And when I’m able to do that life always gets much simpler..and happier!

Everyday Simplicty – A Practical Guide to Spiritual Growth by Robert J. Wicks is a great book to help you lead a simplified life.  I strongly recommend it.

everyday simplicity

Living simply isn’t “in”.  We place too much value on what we have or what we will have in the future.  That’s too bad, because we end up missing out on the things that really matter in life.  I think that life is much more fulfilling when I take out all the excess and keep it simple.

gardening newbie

This Saturday Mike and I decided to take on our sad, empty garden bed at the front of our house.  We got these tools and a pair of gloves for him and some gloves for me.  And then we jumped right in!

We had a little bit of mulch in our bed already but it’d been sitting there for months.  So we raked most of it to the side and put down six 2 cu ft bags of Miracle Gro flower garden soil.

We really didn’t know what flowers we wanted except for the fact that whatever we got needed to do good in the shade.  We looked around at Home Depot and Walmart but the options were limited for shade plants.  So we went to Westwood Gardens down the street from us and they had a ton of stuff.

At this point I was overwhelmed, how do you choose?  We bothered a couple employees and decided to just go for it, so if it was pretty and would work in the shade it went in our cart.

We ended up getting:

1 old-fashioned bleeding heart – perennial – part shade to full shade

2 creeping phlox – perennial – partly shade to full shade – attracts butterflies

3 columbine aquilegia ‘songbird blue jay’ – perennial  – full sun to full shade – attracts hummingbirds

6 double impatiens fiesta ole purple stripe – annual – shade

6 alyssum clear crystal white – annual – sun or part sun (looks like we didn’t realize this one isn’t a shade flower, guess we’ll just cross our fingers that they last)

And did we look at prices at all?  Sort of, but not really.  At this point we were both getting tired and didn’t care.  But the grand total for all of these flowers was $91.31.

Next we planted everything.  Perennials in the back, annuals in the front.  Then we put the mulch back on top and added 3 more bags of new brown mulch.  Lastly, we put in these solar powered lights that we got from Home Depot, not a bad deal and they do work.

It turned out nice and makes the house look much better.  We may add some more flowers and edging stones later.  Now if we can just keep everything alive…
